The 75% Rule Explained for Indian Universities

Under UGC, AICTE, and State Technical Universities (such as VTU Karnataka, Anna University Tamil Nadu, AKTU UP, Mumbai University, and Delhi University), students are legally required to maintain at least 75% physical attendance in every course to be eligible for end-semester exams.

To check bunks available (attendance ≥ 75%)floor((100 × attended − 75 × total) ÷ 75)
To check classes needed in a row (attendance < 75%)ceil((75 × total − 100 × attended) ÷ 25)

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if my attendance falls below 75%?

If your attendance drops below 75%, colleges place you on the detention list. Depending on whether your attendance is between 65% and 74%, you may apply for condonation with valid medical proof or OD certificates after paying a condonation fine. Below 65%, detention is usually mandatory without exception.

Does attending an extra class increase percentage faster than bunking drops it?

No. Bunking drops your percentage much faster because total increases while present stays flat. Recovering requires attending 3 to 4 classes consecutively for every 1 class bunked when close to the 75% boundary.
